Navigating the Deeply Discounted Wine World

A banner announcing “All wines, 20% off, semi-annual Wine Sale” caught my eye as I drove quickly past the shopping mall. The next day, slowing down, I noticed the store was one of those discount food places.

Probably nothing but wines in dented cans, right?  So I kept driving. A few days later, no longer able to curb my curiosity, I stopped. And shopped. Like really shopped.

The sale was at a Grocery Outlet Bargain Market. The one I visited in Bermuda Dunes was a maze of wine with well over 100, maybe close to 200 wines on display. All in bottles ( no cans) and representing every wine country and many, many regions. Not surprisingly for a discount wine program, Argentina and Chile were well-represented, but Spain and Italy were not far behind. There were several Bordeaux along with the rest of France. California and Washington State had their own sections. One wall was lined with Chardonnay!

My first impression was “What the?”  Prices started at $3.99 a bottle, with $6.99 looking like the average. Many of the labels were familiar brands such as Ravenswood, Pedroncelli, St. Clement, Canoe Ridge, McBride Sisters, and Mercer Estates, to cite a few examples. A Rose from one of the most reliable French producers, Chapoutier, was priced at $3.99. There also was a $5.99 white from Quinta de Crasto, a high-end winery well-known to me which is in Portugal’s Douro Valley. 

Then I hit the motherlode with Pinot Noir from one of my long-time favorites, Sarah’s Vineyard in Santa Clara County. Normally selling for $35, there they were at $6.99.  That first visit saw me walk out with several bottles in addition to the Pinots, and I’ve visited other Grocery Outlets since then. 

I always try unfamiliar wines and while a few purchased were dogs woofing at me, the price range makes these explorations relatively painless.

But why are some wines so heavily discounted?  My best guess is poor marketing on the part of the producer, the sales team, the importer and/or wholesaler. A small winery may need the cellar space for the newest vintage, or it just may need cash flow by selling in quantity. Bigger producers may be discontinuing the product or the label. Whatever, the appeal of the Grocery Outlet is that it doesn’t advertise the way the typical Safeway/Abertson chains do. For a producer, importer,  and wholesaler, selling quickly and quietly has its appeal. 

Since most normal people have not been writing about wines and probably haven’t spent time in every major wine country and tasted literally thousands, for what it may be worth to you, I’m going to share my thoughts and shopping tips here. After that, if you are still with me, the conversation will shift to some background about Grocery Outlet which has almost as many stores as Trader Joe’s but it is less well known.

 Shopping Tips from a Wine Professional

1. Read the back label. The boring flipside with the mandatory details, not the artsy, colorful one with the brand.  For each wine that interests you, if you don’t recognize the brand, look at the back label for the name of the producer. Or the company that bottled it. Both are in the fine print.  Begin by learning the producer’s name is step #1.

2. The back label will also tell you the involvement of the producer/bottling company. For instance,”Produced & Bottled By” is a good sign indicating that the winery made most of the wine in the bottle, rather than buying it from another company. “Cellared By” is less reliable and

“Vinted & Bottled by” is pretty bogus. “Vinted” to me says the wine was bought ready-made and simply bottled.

3. Now to the wine’s origin. Check the place name, the appellation (where the grapes were grown) on the front label, such as Napa Valley or Columbia Valley with the home of the producer/bottler on the back.  If you are looking at a Cabernet from Columbia Valley but see on the back that it was bottled in Napa, Lodi, or Acampo, it is a brand owned by a major company  and the wine was trucked to a common bottling facility. The grapes may be grown in Napa or Sonoma, but If it says “Bottled in Modesto, CA,” the wine is, like Barefoot, one of dozens of brands owned by Gallo.

Yes, wines are transported in tanker trucks and in boats on their way to be bottled. You may  be shocked to know that many Sauvignon Blancs made in New Zealand are shipped literally to a bottling plant in California. Check that back label if in disbelief. 

4. How old is too old?  Making sense out of the vintage date and vintage information. The year, say, 2020, simply tells you when the grapes were harvested, not when the wine was bottled. Most wines are at their best when young, especially whites and Roses. But a 3 or 4 year old white is not necessarily over the hill. A Rose, despite its fragile drink soon image can often be enjoyable 2 or 3 years after the vintage. 

Red wines are more complicated and most are fairly safe up to 5 years after the vintage. My recent experiences involved two reds from 2013. The first, a Paso Robles, was clearly in decline, dull, lost its fruitiness  and a little fizzy. The other, a Syrah from the Sierra Nevada Foothills, was at its peak. It was also an excellent Syrah. And both, to keep us on topic, were priced at $6.99.

But my shopping guideline is to avoid whites and roses that are 5 years or older and stay away from most reds more than 10 years old. Whether offered online or in a wine store, any wine around 10 years of age makes me question where it has been during those years. Was it properly stored? Moved around? Somebody’s reject? Yes, best to avoid older wines.

5. Corks and screw caps become an issue when shopping for discounted wines.. Let’s face it, most wines are displayed standing up and a few end up in the sunniest part of the store. Corks may be traditional but they tend to dry out over time and don’t protect the wine. So you’re better off passing over old wines with corks.

6. If you use the vivino site and take photos of bottles, it is better to use google to learn more about the wine. Vivino doesn’t sell most of these wines so will offer minimal info. Go to google to see if the brand exists, and then look for it at wine.com or cellartracker for its history. If it has one which is a good thing.

7.If you taste new wines with others, don’t give the price paid ahead of time. Both newcomers and longtime wine drinkers have been brainwashed to think price equates to quality. The same people who go to Amazon for the cheapest available product, will be predisposed to not like a cheap bargain wine.

The Best Online Wine Shop?

So, I have to confess my picks for the Sweet 16 college teams did not fare well. Each one has, alas, gone home.

My game is online wine shopping, and here is my choice for one of the Final Four

garagistewine.com is the most peculiar online retailer I follow. One reason is that its founder Jon Rimmerman who has been offering wines for over 20 years often presents his daily offers late at night.  He is based in Washington State which may explain some things.

He sometimes seems a bit chatty and becomes so excited and enthusiastic that he might belabor a point about a particular wine or region.

He is also insistent about when he will ship your wines and specifies the required temperature and humidity for proper shipping.

But these minor quirks are greatly offset by the pluses.

  • He seeks out wines that are organic, biodynamic and farmed sustainably  
  • He favors small artisan producers and family owned wineries
  • He obtains many wines direct so truly cuts out the middleman
  • He doesn’t use inflated scores from Somms
  • His wines are attractively priced
  • And he is unpredictable, sometimes offering olive oil, nutella, or food items. All high quality.

I enjoy reading his detailed notes because he truly knows his stuff. His background insights about vintages and regions are extremely useful. He is particularly on top of the vintage variations in France’s Burgundy and the Rhone.

He provided a detailed report on 2016 and 2017 based on travels and tastings throughout France and it is spot on. His remarks about 2015 and 2016 Bordeaux are the most reliable in the wine trade.

His analysis of 2016 in Burgundy and of the 2017 Northern Rhone are some of the best I’ve read.

And to this fellow Loire Valley lover, he has the inside track on Loire Valley wines:

“2018 is one of those “pinch me, this can’t possibly be true?” red wine vintages in the Loire. I can’t really compare it to anything else – it has the ripeness of a vintage like 1989 but the freshness of 1996 (another classic year.”

He also looks closely for super wines from Washington, of course but also Oregon. A recent Washington Tempranillo was remarkable.

He often locates super wines under $15 a bottle.

He recently offered a lovely Provence Rose for sale at $9.99.

He found “the best Bordeaux you’ve never heard of” from 2011.

He comes across as frank, as in these recent notes:

“This is fastidiously produced Chardonnay without a smidge of pretense but the stuffing and expression to, well, pummel just about any other example from outside the Burgundian reach under $30. In addition, the impact is from fruit, stone and clarity, not from alcohol, wood or from winemaker strategic manipulation/enhancement.”

Or

“If you think “bargain” wine is devoid of potential pleasure or cannot be in the league of top-drawer entrants, guess again. This wine can easily compete with Sauvignon Blanc at 2-3 times the $ and many of its competitors are not as delicious to drink.”

Sometimes to keep prices low, he suggests buying 6 or 12 bottles or more which may seem like hype and hustle, but I think he is sincere and honest in his emphasis on offering value.

A maximum number of bottles a person may purchase is always listed, ranging from 6 to 60.

Pros:

Wildly eclectic selection not found elsewhere.

Excellent prices

Seeks out biodynamic and other green products.

Cons:

Complicated shipping procedures and delivery dates but only to assure wines arrive in fine condition.

Cyber Monday Tips for the Savvy Wine Shopper

In the online wine world, the tempo is typically fast-paced as most push for quick reactions under the threat of selling out soon. The flash sales sites habitually push for a rapid ”Add to my cart” response, but others play the same uptempo game.

Most emphasize their miniscule allocations and spectacular one-time only price. Then there are the special case only deals and clearance sales with their limited inventory adding to the charged tempo.

Built upon a rapid response pace, what is emerging in online wine selling is kind of an anything goes attitude. They don’t want to give you sufficient time to think, to make a decision based upon what they are saying.

And what they are saying often tends to be misinformation and associations that are not logical.

Many descriptions and background narratives for the wines on sale often stray way beyond normal and often come across as frenzied hype. Are they trying too hard to close the deal?

You can judge for yourself on Monday.

Here are common sales pitches that fall into the trying way too hard to hype an over priced wine.

#1 The 100 point Reference to Winemaker and Vintage

The wine is “Made by a 100 point winemaker.” Or by someone who apprenticed with a 100 point winemaker. Add “legendary winemaker” and “icon” as well.

And not to forget the references to the “greatest vintage ever.” A few vintages have been rated 100 points.

The faulty logic is that it is the wine that earned 100 points from some person, well regarded or otherwise. NOT the winemaker.  And that wine has nothing to do with the one presently on sale.

A personal example is that I once got a hole in one, a perfect shot. Haven’t had one since and my current game is, well, not perfect.

And vintage assessments, rating are only to be taken as general guidelines, not quality guarantees. Humans make wines and humans are prone to make mistakes. Even under the best conditions.

#2 The Expanding Neighborhood

Next is the faulty neighborhood association, as in this Cabernet was made from a  “Superbly mature and well-drained Cabernet Sauvignon site on rocky, east-side of Oakville District AVA, next door to Screaming Eagle.” Or next door to Harlan Estate, Montelena, Silver Oak or Petrus.

Problem with this is that the neighboring property could be a swamp or more likely not a duplicate from The Truman Show.  I once owned a home flanked by two one-percenters. Each of them drove Porsches. I drove a Prius and mowed my own lawn. But we were neighbors.

#3 Huge Discounts of 50-70%

Huge savings, heavily discounted prices. While 50, even 70% off retail seems like a can’t miss deal, beware.

Obviously, some of these are being dumped for a reason, usually getting too old. Or from someone, producer, wholesaler, retailer, who needs some cash to stay in business.

However, It is not unusual for some wines to be made only for online sales. Known as private labels in the industry, there are many custom made wines sold online.

These are the majority of wines from big sites like tastingroom.com, nakedwines.com and winc.com. The site can declare the wine’s retail price is $150 and then offer it at whatever low price looks good. The wine is said to be exclusive which may also mean it was custom made from somebody’s leftover wine.

However, you should get at least 20% off retail to make buying online worthwhile.

To verify full retail prices, I use www.winesearcher.com. It tracks prices at retail around the globe and also at various wine auctions.

Also, go to the producer’s website, if there is one, to find the real retail price.

A few recent examples of false logic and misinformation :

“With World Class Winemakers like: Helen Turley and Merry Edwards, one could say B.R. Cohn is one of the Most Influential Producers in History!”

Really, in history? No, you truly can’t just say that because it isn’t true. Neither works there now and haven’t set foot there in years, maybe decades. And what means “influential”?

“No other vintage has more 100 point Napa wines than 2015.”

One might ask, “So what?” More wineries now and more critics. Some writer just awarded 27 Napa wines from 2015 a perfect score.

And here is a over the top example of winemaker hype, vintage hype, and tenuous neighborhood claim all in one:

“It all started in 1996…hinging on the mastery of 100pt Philippe Melka. After 16 years of crafting world-class small lot mountain Cabernet Carlo Di Ruocco hung up his hat. 2012 marks the end of a Legend! Ardente Winery, located at 1500 feet on the rocky volcanic slopes of Atlas Peak neighbors the famed Pahlmeyer Estate. From a classic vintage.”

What a jumble of non-sequiturs and irrelevant info. Why did he hang up his hat?
